# Contact settings

> Configure how Dovetail identifies, creates, and enriches your contacts.

Contact settings is where you configure how Dovetail identifies, creates, and enriches your contacts across your workspace. You'll find it under **Settings → Data management → Contact settings**.

It covers three things:

* **Contact identifiers**: a workspace-wide mapping that tells Dovetail which of your contact fields represent email, name, company, job title, and ARR.
* **Speaker identification**: automatically identifies speakers in transcripts and creates or updates contacts.
* **Enrichment**: integrations that sync metadata to your contacts, such as Salesforce or HubSpot.

## Contact identifiers

Contact identifiers tell Dovetail which of your contact fields represent the five core identity attributes: **email**, **name**, **company**, **job title**, and **ARR**. Set them once, and every feature that creates or enriches contacts (Speaker identification, Salesforce or HubSpot enrichment, Channels rollups) uses the same mapping automatically.

To configure them, go to **Settings → Data management → Contact settings** and click `Configure` next to Contact identifiers.

For each identifier, pick the contact field in your workspace that should represent it. If you don't have a field yet, you can create one inline from the dialog.

Once mapped, these fields appear in your Contacts database with an **ID badge** on the column header so you can tell at a glance which fields are system fields.

<Note>
  Changes apply to new field data only. Existing contacts won't be updated unless they're interacted with or engaged again.
</Note>

### Changing or deleting a contact identifier

If you try to unmap a contact identifier, or delete a field that's currently mapped to one, Dovetail will warn you first. Features that rely on the mapping won't work until you assign a replacement, so it's worth checking what's connected before making the change.

Only workspace admins can update contact identifiers.

## Speaker identification

Speaker identification automatically creates or updates contacts from your transcripts. When you upload a video or audio file and transcribe it in a Project, Dovetail finds participant details in the transcript and across your integrations, then writes them to your contacts database.

This feature currently applies to transcripts in Projects only, and does not apply to data in Channels.

### Choose an enrichment mode

You can choose how Dovetail handles contacts found in transcripts by selecting one of three modes:

* **Auto-create and update**: Dovetail creates new contacts and updates existing ones automatically.
* **Update existing only**: only contacts already in your database are updated. No new contacts are created.
* **Off**: Speaker identification is disabled entirely.

To do this, go to **Settings → Data management → Contact settings** and click `Configure` next to Speaker identification.

### Where contact data comes from

Dovetail uses multiple sources to find contact information:

* **Zoom or Microsoft Teams imports**: contact name and email are pulled where available.
* **Calendar integrations**: participant details are pulled from the calendar event.
* **Transcript content**: all other information, including role, company, or name if not available from the above sources, is inferred by AI directly from the transcript.

### Choose which details to save as fields

In the Speaker identification dialog, you can toggle which metadata gets saved to your contacts. Each metadata item (email, company, role, and so on) maps to the contact field defined in your Contact identifiers. Turn off any you don't want Dovetail to write.

<Note>
  Changes apply to new field data only. Existing contacts won't be updated unless they're interacted with or engaged again.

## Enrichment

Enrichment integrations sync external metadata into your contacts. These are configured in the relevant integration's settings, but appear in Contact settings so you can see what's connected.

Salesforce and HubSpot are currently the available enrichment integrations. Only one CRM enrichment source can be connected at a time; if one is already connected, you'll need to disconnect it before connecting the other. HubSpot Contacts is available on the Enterprise plan only, if you're on a different plan, you'll only see Salesforce here.

To configure, see the [Salesforce integration guide](https://docs.dovetail.com/integrations/salesforce) or the [HubSpot Contacts integration guide](https://docs.dovetail.com/integrations/hubspot-contacts).

<Note>
  Enrichment only updates contacts that already exist in your Contacts database, matched by email. It cannot create new contacts.
