Overview

Dovetail can create contacts and update their details from the data you bring in. It matches people to contacts on the Email default contact field. See Default contact fields.
Contact identifiers are no longer needed. Dovetail now uses the default contact fields instead, with no setup. See Default contact fields.

Create contacts from source data

For integrations whose data includes customer email addresses, a source can create contacts from those addresses and link its data points to them. Channels 2.0 uses those links to show who is behind each piece of evidence and how many customers are behind each idea. See Contacts and revenue. As each data point is imported, Dovetail matches the customers’ email addresses to contacts, creates a contact for any address that doesn’t match one, and links the data point to those contacts. Workspace users and addresses at your workspace’s allowed email domains are skipped. New contacts get only an email address and, when the tool provides one, a name. Role, company, and revenue come from your CRM, or from speaker identification in project transcripts. See Enrich contacts from your CRM.

Turn contact creation on or off

Contact creation is a setting on each source. It’s on by default when you create the source, and you can change it later. The setting applies in every channel that uses the source, and a change applies to data the source imports from then on.

Speaker identification

Speaker identification creates and updates contacts for the people Dovetail identifies in project transcripts, including their email, role, and company. In Settings → Data management → Transcription, workspace admins choose whether it creates new contacts, only updates existing ones, or is turned off. See Speaker identification.

Enrich contacts from your CRM

A customer context source (CRM enrichment) adds details from Salesforce or HubSpot, such as role, company, and revenue, to your contacts. See Customer context sources.
  • Existing contacts only. Dovetail matches CRM records to contacts on the Email default contact field, and updates only contacts that already exist. CRM enrichment doesn’t create contacts.
  • Mapped fields. You choose which CRM fields fill which contact fields.
  • One way. Data flows from the CRM into Dovetail. Your CRM records aren’t changed.
  • One CRM at a time. A workspace can connect Salesforce or HubSpot, but not both.
Channels 2.0 uses the company and revenue on linked contacts to roll up revenue on ideas. See Revenue and customer roll-ups on ideas. For setup, syncing, and plan requirements, see Salesforce Contacts or HubSpot Contacts.

Other ways to add contacts

  • By hand or from a CSV file. Add contacts one at a time, or import a list from a CSV file into the Contacts database. See Add a new contact to your database.
  • Zapier. The Add Contact action creates a contact from any Zap. See Zapier.
  • The Dovetail API. Create and update contacts from your own systems. See Dovetail API.
