Overview

Build customer-driven roadmaps by creating tickets from and linking customer feedback to projects in Jira. The Jira integration works with ideas and data points in Channels, and with docs, so you can act on what you learn from customers. Jira is a connected app: each user connects their own Jira account. Set up Jira integration

You can connect your Jira account to Dovetail from a channel you can edit, or from Settings.
  • Open an idea or a data point in a channel, open its actions menu, and select Jira.
  • Follow the prompts to sign in to Jira and approve access.
  • Once you’re connected, the Send to Jira dialog opens so you can create the issue. See Link Dovetail content to Jira.

Link Dovetail content to Jira

You can link Channels ideas, Channels data points, and docs to Jira. When linking, these items are attached to Jira issues as embedded objects. You need edit access to the channel or doc.
  • To do this, open an idea, data point, or doc, and open its actions menu.
  • Next, select Jira and configure your new issue:
    • Required fields: Select a project and an issue type, and enter a summary.
    • Optional fields: You can also add a description, set a priority level, or assign the issue to a team member.
  • Select Create issue.

View Dovetail content in Jira

Once an idea, data point, or doc from Dovetail is linked, it appears as an interactive embed within the Jira issue or project. The embed shows a preview of the content from Dovetail and includes a direct link back to the original item for full context.
While only authenticated users can link or create items from Dovetail, the resulting embeds are visible to all users in Jira, and the link status is visible to all users in Dovetail.

Disconnect your Jira account

When you disconnect Jira, Dovetail no longer has access to your Jira data or your Jira account information. Disconnecting doesn’t delete the Jira issues you created from Dovetail. If you select Send to Jira again later, Dovetail asks you to connect your Jira account first. To disconnect, go to Settings → Connected apps, select Configure next to Jira, and remove your connection. See Disconnect an app. Workspace admins can also remove other users’ connections. Requested permissions

When connecting Jira to Dovetail, you’ll be asked to authorize a set of OAuth scopes. These scopes determine what data Dovetail can access in your Jira account. They’re used when you create or link Jira issues from Dovetail, for example when you send ideas or data points to Jira. Scopes requested:
  • read:me
  • offline_access
  • read:jira-work
  • write:jira-work
  • read:jira-user
This access allows Dovetail to:
  • Read existing Jira issues
  • Create and update issues in Jira
  • Associate Jira issues with Dovetail data
Importing Jira Service Management requests is a separate connection: a workspace admin sets it up as a source, and it requests its own read-only scopes. See Jira Service Management.

Notes

  • The offline_access scope allows Dovetail to maintain the connection without requiring you to re-authenticate frequently.
  • Dovetail only accesses data that the connected Jira user already has permission to view or modify.
