Overview

Build customer-driven roadmaps by creating tickets from and linking customer feedback to projects in Linear. Our Linear integration works across ideas and data points in Channels as well as docs and highlights in Projects so you can act on what you learn from customers. Linear is a connected app: each user connects their own Linear account. Learn more about connected apps →

Set up Linear integration

Any user with access to both Linear and Dovetail can connect Linear from Settings → Connected apps in Dovetail.
  • To connect your Linear account, go to Settings → Connected apps, find Linear under App connectors, and select Connect.
  • Next, select Connect in the dialog, sign in to your Linear account, review the requested permissions, and authorize the connection.
  • Once connected, you will be able to create and link Dovetail content to Linear issues and projects.

Create a Linear issue

Create a Linear issue or project directly from customer feedback in Channels or Projects.
  • To do this, open a channel, then open the actions menu on an idea or a data point.
  • Next, click Linear then Create new issue.
  • From there, complete details that you want to appear in Linear. When creating an issue, you must select a team and enter an issue name. Optional fields include a description for the issue, a label, state, priority, assignee, project, and customer.

Create a Linear project

Create a Linear project directly from customer feedback in Channels or Projects.
  • To do this, open a channel, then open the actions menu on an idea or a data point.
  • Next, click Linear then Create new project.
  • From there, complete details that you want to appear in Linear. When creating a project, you must select a team and enter a project title. Optional fields include a description for the project, a label, and customer.

Link Dovetail content to Linear

You can link ideas and data points in Channels, highlights in projects, and docs to Linear. When linking, these items are attached to Linear issues or projects as embedded objects.
  • To do this, open the actions menu on an idea, data point, or doc and click Linear, or open the ••• menu on a highlight and click Send to Linear.
  • Next, search for the existing Linear issue or project you want, select it, and select Link.
    • Issue: The Dovetail item is attached to the issue.
    • Project: A link to the Dovetail item is added to the project.

View Dovetail content in Linear

Once a doc, idea, or highlight from Dovetail is linked, it will appear as an interactive embed within the Linear issue or project. The embed shows a preview of the content from Dovetail and includes a direct link back to the original item for full context.
While only authenticated users can link or create items from Dovetail, the resulting embeds are visible to all users in Linear, and the link status is visible to all users in Dovetail.

Disconnect your Linear account

When you disconnect Dovetail, we will no longer have access to your Linear data or your Linear account information. Disconnecting doesn’t delete the Linear issues and projects you created from Dovetail. Workspace admins can also remove other users’ connections. See Connected apps.

Requested permissions

The Linear integration uses an OAuth app that requires the following scopes:
  • read – Allows the integration to read data from your Linear workspace.
  • write – Allows the integration to update existing records.
  • issues:create – Lets the integration create new issues in Linear.
  • comments:create – Lets the integration add comments to issues.
These permissions enable Dovetail to sync data, create issues, and add comments automatically, ensuring a smooth workflow between Linear and Dovetail. With these scopes, the integration can access Linear workspace data that the installing user has permission to see.
